Austin College to Host Community ?E-Waste? Recycling

SHERMAN, TEXAS?Austin College will hold an ?e-waste? recycling event open to the public on Saturday, February 4, from 9 a.m. to noon, at 1318 East Pacific Street (the old Sherman Wire building, approximately two blocks south of Austin College?s Apple Stadium). A recycling truck in the parking lot will accept unwanted electrical equipment and materials for recycling. All members of the community are welcome to drop off electronic items.
The recycling is free, except for more than two-per-car CRT monitors and/or non-flat-screen TVs, which will have a disposal fee of $7 each for the CRT monitors and $15 each for TVs. The first two of each may be recycled at no charge. These items contain hazardous materials and are a breakage hazard so require special handling to remove toxins before other materials in the items can be recycled.
A wide variety of items can be recycled?anything with a power cord or on/off button. Power cords, surge protectors, USB flash drives, DVDs, CDs, videotapes, and cassette tapes also can be recycled. ?If it runs on electricity, we take it,? event organizers summarize.
The College is working with EWD, E-Waste Disposal of Dallas, to ensure proper processing.
The items collected will be reviewed for possible reuse or refurbishing, which applies to about 20 to 30 percent of the items. Some items are refurbished; others are broken down at the recycling facility for parts and materials. Raw materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, glass, and plastics are recovered and processed.
